Vetiver Grass - An Amazing solution for Environment Safety & Income Generation

What is Vetiver Grass?

Indians know this grass by the name of Khus-Khus for many centuries and love the fragrance.

Vetiver grass, Vetiveria zizanioides, has been known to be useful plant for man for thousands of years. Rural people have used it for centuries for the oil from its roots, for the roots themselves and the leaves. Its centre of origin is in India and it has spread around the world through its by-product value as a producer of aromatic oil for the perfume industry (Khus-Khus). It has been used in our country since ancient times and is recorded as a medicinal plant in the Ayurvedic science. For several centuries Vetiver has been commercially cultivated for the scented oil that is distilled from its roots. In North India villagers weave these roots into mats, baskets, fans and ornaments. They also weave them into window coverings that freshen the air of village homes with a severe and penetrating scent. The roots and oil are known to repel insects. People in India and elsewhere have long used Vetiver roots among their clothes to keep insects away. Join Indian Vetiver Network IVN

The above photo is related to my initial effort to improve the quality of water at Guruvayur Temple pond. The work is incomplete and more plants/floats are to be introduced to make an impact on quality of water. This is my "samarpan" (offerings) to lord Krishna. The temple authorities are taking interest in the subject which is new to them.
