SUN is working mainly for empowerment of Underprivileged living in rural India and based at Allahabad, a district based in South-Eastern part of the state Uttar Pradesh  state map, touching Southern Nepal.

Population wise Allahabad is, the largest district of state and its borders touching northern districts of the state Madhya Pradesh map.

Local Population

About 80% of Allahabad District map population lives in villages and they earn their living from agriculture unemployment is very high – some 60% plus – only 40% of the population has work of any kind.

Agriculture is the main occupation in the villages but this provides work for only about 50% of those actually engaged in the activity.

In terms of the 20% of the population engaged in farming the relationship is about 2:1 in terms of self-employed to employed labour.

It is critical therefore that additional employment be generated in the area

Landless farmers are obliged to work as laborers in the fields of others to earn either grain (3-4 kg./day) or cash (Rupees 50-60/day. i.e. ~ US$ 1.00).

Women get ½ the wages of men and a child gets 1/4th of this to work in the fields. They have no time to attend schools and, thus, cannot escape the poverty that binds them. However, things are improving for men but not for women and children.

Men get work for only 120-130 days in a year.  Accordingly, a significant number of landless farmers are forced to migrate to other richer states like Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra.

Income generation opportunities are narrowing continuously and people are finding it very difficult to maintain their families with low income levels.
