Landless
farmers are obliged to work as laborers in the fields of others to earn
either grain (3-4 kg./day) or cash (Rupees 50-60/day. i.e. ~ US$ 1.00).
Women
get ½ the wages of men and a child gets 1/4th of this to work in
the fields. They have no time to attend schools and, thus, cannot escape the
poverty that binds them. However, things are improving for men but not for
women and children.
Men
get work for only 120-130 days in a year. Accordingly, a significant number
of landless farmers are forced to migrate to other richer states like
Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra.
Income generation opportunities are narrowing continuously and people are
finding it very difficult to maintain their families with low income levels. |
